The Gift of Sacrifice: Understanding and Giving Qurbani
Qurbani, also known as Udhiya, is a powerful act of sacrifice performed by Muslims worldwide each year after Eid ul Adha prayers. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's unwavering obedience to God's command, when he was willing to sacrifice his own son, Ismail. This act of devotion is a reminder of our own commitment to faith and the importance of sacrifice in our lives.
What is Qurbani and How Does it Work?
Qurbani involves the slaughter of an animal – a sheep, goat and cow – in accordance with specific guidelines. The meat is then distributed, with a minimum of one-third going to those in need. Traditionally, the remaining two-thirds are shared between the donor's family and community. Many choose to donate their Qurbani to be performed in poorer countries, where the impact of their contribution is greatest.
Who is Obligated to Give Qurbani?
According to most Islamic schools of thought, Qurbani is obligatory for all sane adults who possess wealth exceeding their basic needs. Generally, this means anyone who is eligible to pay Zakat is also required to perform Qurbani.
When Should I Donate for Qurbani?
You can donate for Qurbani anytime up until the 13th day of Dhul Hijjah, which is the third day of Eid ul Adha. The sacrifice itself must be carried out before sunset on the 14th of Dhul Hijjah. However, it's highly recommended to donate as early as possible. This ensures that organizations have enough time to process the donations and deliver the Qurbani meat to beneficiaries in time for Eid ul Adha.
The Impact of Your Qurbani
In a world facing a growing food crisis, Qurbani parcels are more vital than ever. In regions like Yemen, Syria, and Palestine, millions struggle with food insecurity and poverty. Your Qurbani donation provides nutritious food to vulnerable families, offering them sustenance and hope. It's a tangible expression of care and support, reminding them that they are not forgotten. With approximately 815 million people globally suffering from chronic undernourishment, your contribution can make a significant difference.
The Story Behind the Sacrifice
Qurbani's roots lie in the story of Prophet Ibrahim. He dreamt that God commanded him to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail. In an act of complete obedience, Ibrahim prepared to fulfill this command. However, God, recognizing Ibrahim's unwavering faith, spared Ismail and provided a ram to be sacrificed in his place. This act symbolizes our own willingness to surrender to God's will and prioritize faith above all else.
Choosing the Right Animal for Qurbani
The animals typically used for Qurbani are sheep, goats and cow. They must be healthy and free from defects. Goats and sheep must be at least one year old and cattle two years old,. Smaller animals like sheep or goats count as one Qurbani share, while larger animals like and cattle are divided into seven shares. You can purchase multiple shares, one for each family member or even in remembrance of loved ones who have passed away.
